WordPress 3.3 will not support Internet Explorer 7

Internet Explorer 7 may be on the chopping block for WordPress 3.3

WordPress 3.2 saw the end of support for Internet Explorer 6, and the internet rejoiced. Every user of a modern browser was thankful to WordPress for making the shift. Even Microsoft was. And it looks like there might be another round of thank yous on the way.

Core WordPress developers have mentioned the possibility that WordPress 3.3 may see the end of support for Internet Explorer 7 as well. For instance, lead developer Mark Jaquith teased the idea on Twitter:

Would you like to see Internet Explorer 7 dropped in the next version of WordPress? Are you excited to see WordPress encouraging its users to move to more modern browsers?

On July 4, US is celebrating Independence Day and Automattic – the company behind most popular blogging platform “WordPress” has offered a gift to the WP bloggers all over the world in the form of WordPress 3.2. The latest WordPress is refreshingly new and the Matt Mullenweg (founder of WordPress) says in a blog post  that it is their fifteenth major release. The release is called “Gershwin”.

WP 3.2 offers number of improvements and it’s aimed at making the software faster and lighter. We performed the upgrade on our test servers and found that the software indeed feels faster. The first thing we noticed is the refreshed new GUI for the admin panel. We won’t talk about all the minor improvements WP team has included as it would make the post too long. I am going to miss the ‘New Post’ button on the top for easy access to the post editor but I guess, that’s just me. Now the refreshed UI comes at a cost of IE6 which is a very welcome move by the company. Even Microsoft is trying to get rid of the 10 year old browser. We are impressed by the changes in the UI and believe there’s lot more for us to explore. The post editor features improvements and just for the sake of records, we are composing this post using the new full-screen, distraction free, ‘just write’ editor. Which offers nothing but text and easy access to commonly used text editing buttons. The new release also supports refreshed HTML5 powered Twenty Eleven theme which offers lots of options for easy customization.

With all the improvements, the server environment requirements have also been updated. WordPress 3.2 requires PHP version 5.2.4 or greater & MySQL version 5.0 or greater. So be sure to check with your web hosting provider before you decide to upgrade your current installation. Here’s an official video from Automattic which takes us through the improvements in WordPress 3.2.
